As always, when in a foreign country, international calls made from a hotel can be extremely expensive. I’ve found one of the best strategies is to make prior arrangements with one of your home carriers, such as AT&T. Arrange before you leave to have your foreign destination added to your long distance service at very competitive rates, and when you call home (home phone number only) using your AT&T calling card, you’ll get the same low rate. For instance, an card call from the US to Bermuda can be as low as 35¢ and the same rate will apply when you make a calling card call from Bermuda to your home phone number. Be aware that some US carriers have no service from Bermuda, so check before you go.
Some carriers also charge an international connection fee; be prepared for sticker shock. And check with your hotel to see if they impose any charges over and above those of your international carrier. Some do, and you might get an unexpected surprise when you receive your bill on check-out. Also find out what your hotel’s policy is regarding local calls; some charge for these, too.
To call the US and Canada using a credit card or calling card, dial 0 plus the area code and number. Otherwise, dial 011 plus the area code and number.
