Rosedon is a small resort hotel on the the outskirts of Hamilton in Pembroke
County. The main house has Colonial rooms in modern wings
and wide verandahs overlooking magnificent gardens. All the
guest rooms are air-conditioned, have coffee makers, refrigerators,
radio, TV, telephones and safety deposit boxes.
I stayed at Rosedon a couple of years ago. It reminds me of one of the great antebellum mansions of America's Old South. A great white house with a columned front porch that stretches the entire width of the house, where a traditional English breakfast is served with pride and flair. The gardens are spectacular, awash with the colors of giant hibiscus blooms, birds of paradise, and banana plants.
There are two large, antique-filled lounges, with TVs and self-service bars – the honor system prevails – and there’s a heated freshwater pool and sun deck. Unfortunately, there isn’t a restaurant on the property – there are several nearby and just down the road in Hamilton – but breakfast is included in the rate. Afternoon tea is a tradition at Rosedon and worth hurrying back for. Hamilton is a 10- minute walk away (five minutes by bus or the hotel’s free shuttle service) and tennis is available by arrangement with South Shore Beach and Tennis Club or at Stonington Beach, both served by the hotel’s free shuttle service.
Verdict: Not really a hotel for families with small children, but ideal for older couples and business travelers. It’s a bit on the expensive side, but not prohibitively so.
