If you love the outdoors, nature and hiking, you’ll need to make sure Paget Marsh is high on your itinerary when you visit Bermuda. Paget Marsh Bermuda is a lush and leafy nature reserve jointly maintained by the Bermuda National Trust and Bermuda Audubon Society. A unique world of natural peat marsh that today is much as it was since the time before the first settlers arrived on the island. Twenty five acres is all that’s left of what once was a part of a vast tract of mangrove wetlands. Mangroves are hardy, all-invasive and, by the time Bermuda’s Natural Trust took over the park’s management, they had all bet overwhelmed the existing wetlands. So, in 1998, a new half-acre pond was excavated and a boardwalk was constructed to provide full access to the Marsh.
The pond and marsh are provide a natural habitat for wide variety of wildlife, including many species of resident and migratory birds. Here they live among the native ferns, mangroves, saw-grass, cedar and palmetto. And all this you can visit for free.
Better yet, you take a guided tour with Tim Rogers of the Marsh and Waterville Gardens: it’s an excellent way to see and understand it. The tour takes you first through the gardens at Waterville, where you’ll learn about this traditional Bermuda garden, view the elegant house with its fine collection of antiques, and learn a little of what life must have been like in colonial Bermuda. Then, it’s just a short drive to Paget Marsh where the tour continues.
