H.M.S. Cerberus, a 32-gun English Navy ship-of-the-line built in 1779, was lost after hitting the rocks while leaving Castle Harbour sometime early in 1783. The crew tried valiantly to save the sinking ship.
They threw its guns and shot overboard, cut its masts and rigging adrift, but all to no avail and, eventually, they were ordered to abandon ship. In the days that followed, further efforts were made to salvage the guns and gun carriages, and some were eventually brought ashore. Cerberus was 126 feet long, 36 feet across the beam, and displaced a little more than 700 tons. She lies just off King’s Island, to the south of Castle Harbour.
