The Zovetto was built and launched in Glasgow, Scotland, at the end of the First World War in 1919. She was a fairly large freighter, almost 400 feet from bow to stern, with a displacement of 5,100 tons. She was sold to the Italian shipping company, Parodi & Accame out of Genoa, and renamed the Zorvetto. On February 13th, 1924, she was bound for Baltimore out of the Black Sea port of Poti with a cargo of manganese ore when she ran onto the reef while being piloted through the channel of St. David’s. Her crew all made it safely off the ship and her cargo was salvaged. Today, she lies in shallow waters less than a mile south of St. David’s point off the eastern end of the island.
