The Virginia Merchant was lost on March 26th, 1661. She had put into Castle Harbour to pick up supplies and fresh water on her way from Plymouth, England to Jamestown. She had just set sail again with 179 passengers when she ran aground on the rocks 250 yards off the South Shore at Sonesta Beach. All but 10 of her passengers and crew were lost. She was discovered in shallow waters on the breakers. All that’s left are the anchor, some pieces of wood, and a small pile of ballast.
