The Sea Venture. No list of Bermudian shipwrecks would be complete without an account of the one that started it all. The remains of the ship that brought Sir John Somers to the islands in 1609 were discovered in 1958 as a result of a carefully planned search by Edmund Dowding. Dowding’s research indicated the vessel must lie somewhere within an area to the east of St. David’s Head, known as Sea Venture Shoal. He began his search in June and found the wreck in October, lying in 30 feet of water. A representative of the Smithsonian was called in, along with local expert, Teddy Tucker, and the wreck was positively identified as that of the Sea Venture.
