The Darlington - Shipwreck Diving Bermuda

The Darlington, while en route from New Orleans to Bremen in Germany, was lost on the rocks of the Western Reef six miles west of Ely’s Harbour on February 22, 1886. The Darlingtonwas a fairly new ship, built at the massive Swan & Hunter shipyard in Newcastle, England, in 1881.

She was a steamer, 285 feet long, 36 feet across the beam, and displaced 1,990 tons. On her last voyage she was carrying a cargo of cotton and grain. Her loss was blamed on her captain, Richard Ward. It seems he failed to post a lookout while sailing in unfamiliar waters. Her crew of 28 officers and men were all rescued.

The Darlington lies on her port side, collapsed flat, but still fairly intact. She’s been under 15 to 30 feet of water now for more than 100 years.
