The Blanch King was an American schooner built in Maine in 1887. Today, she lies in 35 feet of water on the reef some three miles east of Ely’s Harbour. The ship, a fourmasted, two-decker, was 192 feet long, 42 feet across the beam, and displaced 1,156 tons. On December 2nd, 1920, she was heading from Norfolk, Virginia, to Bermuda with a cargo of coal. She hit the reef and sank; all eight crew members managed to get off safely. The main portion of the wreckage includes some machinery and the center board box that housed a retractable keel. Bits and pieces of cable, rigging and fixtures lie scattered over the reef.
For visitors arriving by air, Bermuda is served by most US airlines and by international airlines from Canada and Europe. Bermuda is also a major destination for the cruise ship industry.
