Henry VIII Restaurant & Bar - Bermuda

The Henry VIII Restaurant & Bar on the South Shore in Southampton Parish is is one of those places you feel obliged to visit, and I planned to do so for many years but never quite got around to it until recently. It’s advertised in all the local guide literature with lots of hype – obviously they employ a good ad agency – that portrays it as a must. It reminds me a great deal of one of those once-great local pubs in England that’s been turned into a pub-and-restaurant, with none of the features that might make either one great.

As a pub, it does a fair job. The beer is good and the pub-grub at lunchtime is fair. In the evenings, dinner is served in four “period” dining rooms. The dishes, often with royal names – Royal Aylesbury Duck, for example – are also adequate but don’t really live up to their exalted titles, and are often a little more expensive than I think they should be. The idea seems to be that you must pay for all this atmosphere, but English visitors will know what I mean when I say it’s more than a little contrived. The Tudor theme comes off as a bit artificial. Having said all that, is it worth a visit? I think so, but with reservations, and you should be prepared to pad the budget a little, especially if there’s more than two in your party.

Open seven days a week for lunch and dinner. Lunch is noon until 2:30; dinner is from 6 until 10. You’ll need to make reservations for dinner, and gentlemen are required to wear a jacket for dinner.
