Bermuda Scuba - When and Where

When and where to go scuba diving in Bermuda? While the majority of dive operators conduct trips throughout most of the year, May through October offers the best water for diving and snorkeling. It’s clear, warm and quiet.

No prior certification for scuba diving is necessary; you can learn when you get there. The costs range from $45 for a one-tank dive to $70 for two tanks. Lessons start at around $80 for novices, and you can be out on the reef the same afternoon. Most of the larger resort hotels offer some sort of diving package, including three-hour courses of instruction for beginners. These cost about $95, and that includes the use of equipment.

Just about any underwater experience you fancy is available off Bermuda’s beach reefs. The coral is honeycombed with ledges, caves and caverns, and the depth varies from just a few feet to more than a thousand beyond the drop-offs. The marine life is abundant, colorful and curious, and you can spend endless hours with just a snorkel, mask and fins, never leaving the shallows.

Shipwrecks lie in waters that vary in depth from a few feet below the surface to more than 100 feet. Of these, only 40 are in good enough condition to offer an interesting dive. The best wrecks are described in this chapter. Most of the operators know where the wrecks are and are knowledgeable about the water and conditions prevailing at each site. It is highly recommended that you go with an experienced guide.
